Civil defense files, 1941-1979.

By law, the Dept. of Aeronautics has general supervision over all phases of aeronautics within the state, Ala. Code, 4-2-33 (1975), including civil defense and search and rescue. With the threat of war, the Civil Aeronautics Administration, with the cooperation of the War Dept., developed plans for a civilian air corps to aid in coastal defense and search and rescue which became in 1941, the Civil Air Patrol. The Dept. of Aeronautics assisted in the development of the Alabama Wing of the CAP and the Director of Aeronautics, Asa Rountree, became a leader of the unit. The files contain correspondence, lists, reports, pamphlets, federal publications, photographs, and orders relating to the national and state CAP and other civil defense policies of the state and federal government, including atomic warfare survival. They include photographs of Rountree and other CAP personnel, some unidentified, at various Alabama air fields and national conferences.
